Pandemics are not a random act of God. A pandemic happens because of a chain reaction rooted in what we humans do with animals and nature in general. We need to connect all the dots together with a thick red pen and come to this conclusion – unless we understand animals, nature, planet earth and change how we interact with them we will continue to have pandemics. The next one is brewing already.

So I thought we can start by trying to understand animals better! Here are some fun facts about animals.

Do you confuse a monkey with an ape, gorilla, chimpanzee, or orangutan? How are they different? Let me tell you!

-We are all primates, including us humans. We have opposable thumbs for one thing.

-Apes are a separate species than monkeys.

-There are 5 types of apes – gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan, bonobos, and gibbons.

-Orangutans appeared 12-15 millions years ago, then gorillas (8 to 9 million) then humans (7-8 million), then chimpanzees and bonobos (5-6 millions) years ago

-The easiest way to differentiate between an ape and a monkey is to look at their tail. Apes do not have tails, just like humans.

-Apes are larger than monkeys and have larger brains

-We can’t see it but apes have an appendix

-Gorillas have a heart shaped nose

-Chimpanzees have a pinkish face, orangutans are reddish brown, and a gorilla’s face is black

-Gorillas have small wars and chips have larger ears

-Humans resemble chimpanzees the most, almost 99.4% genetic similarity
