Definition of Physician Wannapreneur: A physician who wants to be an entrepreneur but can never be one inspite of intense cravings.
After living for seven months in Los Angeles, California and participating very peripherally in the much-touted world of venture capital, I am proud to say that I have added an impressive set of phrases to my daily vernacular! For many of you this may be mundane but remember, I am just a doctor. My lingo is mostly limited to bookish Latin medical terminology.
(1) Hackathon – intense collaboration of very smart software dudes (not a bunch of computer hackers going at it on their PCs or the Walking Dead junta with axes and knives)
(2) Pitch fest – a social entrepreneur event where you get one minute to sell your idea (not a festival on the cricket field)
(3) Crowdfunding – funding a project by raising money from several sources on the Internet (not pickpockets during carnivals, county fairs, or in Paris)
(4) Silicon beach – the tech hub in west LA home to many startups and major companies from the silicon valley (not beaches infested with surgically augmented beauties)
(5) EB-5 visa – a way for foreign investors to obtain a green card by investing a million dollars in the US (really, you can do that? Who knew)
(6) Angel investor – rich people providing capital for a start up in exchange for equity or debt (nothing WHATSOEVER to do with Victoria Secret models with wings)
(7) Accelerators and incubators – entrepreneurial programs too complex to describe here (frankly I don’t get it, but I am sure it has nothing to do with cars and intensive care)
(8) Option pool – a portion of equity reserved for future hires (not a swimming pool with different options, like hot, cold, Jacuzzi etc)
(9) Adventure capitalist – No. NO. He will not take you out ziplining, parasailing or scuba diving. Enough said.
(10) SaaS – software as a service (er….Indian ladies, not the one you are thinking about, the acronym for that is MIL – mother in law)
….And that, my friends, is the entire glossary of a wannabe-entrepreneur too lazy for anything more than mere bragging rights of minimal knowledge….
